The weeks after Labor Day are an ideal time to venture into the Sierra. With smaller crowds and the scorching summer temps cooling off, this can be a great window for one last hike or backpack trip before the shorter and — we can only hope — snowy days of winter. But in recent years, September and October have semi-officially become peak wildfire season in California, and trip planning can feel impossible. It's a time when two words seem to sum up the only reliable planning strategy: Be flexible.
